Turnabout: A Game of Fair & Fun Play by Kris Anticknap

Picture a board game where you play against friends and family the way they are as people. These folks all around you are a lot more interesting than you realize, and you can get some idea of this after a few rounds of Turnabout!

Every game is different. Every outcome is wild! I never thought board games were fun, so I made a fun one called Turnabout. Let me carefully expand on that by saying it is not the anti-board game. Turnabout is the ultimate board game. It’s a bold statement, but I stand behind it as true, or I would not have published Turnabout. It is flawed, but it does not have any of the built-in flaws that make it no fun to play. You can play it and find out all the faults. Speculatively, you can resolve these faults and make that resolution canon around your dining room table. That’s FUN. What isn’t fun is a rigged situation that is just waiting for one lucky player to reach the club, which they will then use to punish the other players with for the rest of the game, however long that is. There are many classic board games out there that families love to play, and Turnabout borrows my favourite elements of each one. Good luck figuring out what they all are. So while I talk about this, I am being quite sincere about it, and hopefully humble, too. I spent five long years play-testing Turnabout, troubleshooting and tweaking it to make it fun and fair. I watched so many people play this game-- and LOVE it enough to ask to play it again. Every moment has been a surprising delight, and I don’t feel the itch to create another game because I feel that I got this one just right.
There’s more to come with Turnabout. Other concepts that I am looking to try out with it. It has its own universe, like many of the popular ones do. I only hope anyone who plays it can enjoy it as much as I do each time. It is, to me, the very spirit of good times where you wouldn’t expect to find them.
